The two ports are located head to head to one another near to the border of Iran and Pakistan. The smooth running of trade activities is very necessary for both of them. Although they are near and can complement each other in a great way yet there are some major challenges to the maintenance of both ports. Baluchistan is the host city for Gawadar, and if both Gawadar and Chabahar ports work together in cooperation, the role of Balochistan becomes more prominent. But in past it is badly affected by terrorism. Recently Pakistan has taken major control on terrorism but still Pakistan needs to focus more on the said issue for bright future of Gawadar.
The other most important challenge among them is the ups and downs in relationship of Iran and Pakistan. History witnessed a great relations of Iran and Pakistan but currently it is badly effected by several factors, i.e., border’s insurgency from both sides and Indian factor between Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan and Iran have blamed one another in the past for insurgencies of terrorists in their borders.
The Indian spy, Kulbhushan was arrested in Balochistan who told the investigation team that he entered from Iranian soil to Balochistan for sabotaging Gawadar. This is a huge question mark on the Iran’s role regarding the success of both ports. However Iran denied his statement and urged that the relations of both countries are much important and they will not let anyone to week it. Apart from that Iran needs to create a balance between her relations towards Pakistan and India.
Moreover the goods from both ports are transferred to central Asian republics through the routes of Afghanistan. Currently more than 60 percent area is under the control of Taliban. The position of Taliban in current scenario is of insurgents. There is no such international laws that are binding on them. So until and unless there is no deal between Taliban and America, the futures of these routes are in ambiguous situation.
