How And Why Have Pakistan’s Military Conflicts Change The Course Of Its Foreign Policy?

Self- interest and power are the core realms of international politics. Every state tends to make sure its maximum power influence and securing of self- interests in the international arena. For the very purpose, states have foreign policy for interacting in international arena with other actors for the smooth performance of their states, in order to make sure their benefits. Besides, self-interests and power, phenomena of globalization and inter-dependence have further increased the importance of foreign policy. No state can remain in isolation due to the above mentioned factors, therefore it needs effective foreign policy for meeting their needs.

Pakistan, like other is a developing country in the south Asia. Although Pakistan is full of opportunities and resources, yet it has a number of needs which compel it to frame a well-managed foreign policy for smooth relations in the world. Historically the policy for foreign affairs of the country has a number of ups and downs because of several reasons. The Pakistan foreign policy has a number of determinants which play their role in shaping it. For instance, geographic location, ideological sentiments, economic needs and natural resources play a significant role in shaping Pakistan foreign policy. Similarly, apart from the mentioned factors, the military conflicts occurred in Pakistan history has a dramatic influence on the Pakistan foreign policy. The post- conflicts periods in the history of Pakistan has witnessed a major change in the foreign policy of Pakistan. Some of the few examples of those changes or influence are discussed as under; 

As mentioned above, the geo strategic location is one of the major factors shaping Pakistan’s foreign policy. Due to the significant position of Pakistan, it gives both a number of opportunities and challenges to the country at the same time. For instance, the India is one of the neighbors of Pakistan with which Pakistan shares a huge boarder. Both countries merely experienced healthy relations after their independence. Pakistan and India, in their 75 years’ history have come across hostile situation due to a number of issues such as Kashmir issue, water management issue, tensions on line of control LOC and terrorism. Due to such issues both countries are involved in several military conflicts over the years. These military conflicts have several significant implications on the foreign policy of Pakistan.
